Back to business, but release postponed to 2023
Hi! It's been a while, but here's another Whispers in the Moss devlog. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the game's main page for more information or consider following me on Twitter for more regular updates. I'm also on Instagram.
My creativity comes and goes in cycles, and when I don't have any of that left in me, I like to take breaks from game development. I hit a phase like that last summer and have been focusing on other stuff (mainly Netflix and jogging!) for the past few months. However, it's been very clear to me this whole time that I'll get back to the game as soon as possible, and now in late November here we are, finally back in business!
I've spent the last few weeks focusing on the game's soundtrack. I've made some very good progress, and from the roughly 30 tracks I have now completed about 25. I'm very satisfied with many of the songs, although I'll admit there are some filler tracks – that is a necessity in order to get something so vast completed in a reasonably short amount of time.
Due to the break, the game's release date will however be pushed back to 2023.
I'll close with a recap of where the game's development stands right now.
- The game engine is basically completed. What's left is to add support for music and sound effects and a bunch of smaller things like the achievement system.
- Content-wise (story, script, maps, monsters, etc.), the game is about 90 % completed. Next up is to finish the last three endgame dungeons and create the very endgame story sequences and script. I'll also need to create one optional town + dungeon, add numerous side quests, add a few more character building sequences to the earlier parts of the game, improve some earlier level and monster designs, etc. But the general message here is that we're come very far already!
- The battle engine is pretty much completed, but I'm still considering a few ideas to make the battles more interesting and give the player more agency.
- The soundtrack, as mentioned, is very close to being finished. The problem is that I'm still missing a few key tracks that keep eluding me (*cough* an epic boss battle theme *cough*). Anyway, my goal is to finish the soundtrack fully before Christmas. After that I'll need to consider what to do with the sound effects.
- The marketing. This is something I'll have to start giving more effort to, and I'm for example planning to open up a Steam page for the game. The problem is that I'm not entirely sure if my game will even be compatible with Steam, but I guess we'll see. :-D
For obvious reasons I don't have much new content to share, but here's a fresh teaser from the game's soundtrack.
See you later!

Keep up the great work! It’s cool that you take your time and not rush things. The content looks crazy, having 25 soundtracks already is incredible :-)
Thanks Adel! I'm very excited about composing songs for the soundtrack right now. Just came up with a really cool jazz track but I don't know if the game can handle a song like that. :-D Perhaps the Colosseum at the cyberpunk town...
How about doing a kickstarter? Should help with the marketing, as well as pay for the switch port.
I've been thinking about it, but I'm not sure how these six-month long breaks whenever I feel like it go along with delivering results for the hypothetical backers. :-D
If the game's good, they'll wait. Just look at Radio the Universe =)
